Gumi City Selected for Three Semiconductor Projects Worth 36.7 Billion KRW... Accelerating Super Gap Initiative
Secured 19.1 Billion KRW in National Funding, Promoting Test Evaluation Center Construction, Specialized Workforce Training, and Technology Development Projects
Since Designation as a Specialized Complex, Total of 64.1 Billion KRW in National Funding Secured, Strengthening Semiconductor Specialized Complex Competitiveness
Gumi City in North Gyeongsang Province has been finally selected for three public projects targeting the National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complexes by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, securing a total budget of 36.7 billion KRW (19.1 billion from the national government, 4.5 billion from the provincial government, 10.5 billion from the city, and 2.6 billion from other sources) by 2028.
First, the city will receive 15 billion KRW in national funding over five years for the "Semiconductor Materials and Parts Testing and Evaluation Center Establishment Project," which is part of the Industrial Innovation Infrastructure Construction initiative. Led by the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL), with cooperation from the Gumi Electronics and Information Technology Research Institute and Kumoh National Institute of Technology, this project will build infrastructure to test and evaluate the characteristics, performance, and reliability of substrates (wafers) and process materials and parts needed for advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
Since the development of semiconductor materials and parts requires long periods and high costs, making it difficult for small and medium-sized enterprises to secure expensive equipment, national support is essential. Accordingly, the city plans to secure necessary equipment based on corporate demand surveys, support technology development and commercialization, and establish a system for issuing KOLAS-certified test reports, thereby promoting the independence of the semiconductor industry and enhancing global competitiveness.
Additionally, two projects were selected for the "National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex Solidarity and Cooperation Support (R&D)" program, securing 4.1 billion KRW in national funding.
Of this, 1.5 billion KRW will be used to establish a customized education system for semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment companies and to nurture specialized talent, while 2.6 billion KRW will be invested in R&D for advanced semiconductor technology development led by Wonik QnC, a leading semiconductor company in Gumi.
Since the designation of the specialized complex, the city has secured 10 billion KRW in national funding for the "Advanced Defense Industry System Semiconductor Parts Demonstration Infrastructure Construction Project," 28 billion KRW for the "Semiconductor Specialized University Support Project," and 7 billion KRW for the "Advanced Industry Talent Development Bootcamp Project." Including the latest projects, the city has now secured a total of 64.1 billion KRW in national funding, further strengthening its position as a semiconductor specialized complex.
Mayor Kim Jangho stated, "We are fostering Gumi City as a specialized complex for materials and parts to achieve a significant technological gap in the national core industry of semiconductors," and added, "I hope the establishment of the Materials and Parts Testing and Evaluation Center will serve as a catalyst for joint growth between the city and companies. We will continue to actively promote corporate R&D support and talent development projects to enhance advanced industry capabilities and play a key role in the future of Korea's semiconductor industry."
