'2024 Samcheok Citizen Award' Grand Prize to Kim Daehwa, Main Prize to Lee Hyangjin

Samcheok City, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Mayor Park Sang-su) announced on the 8th that Kim Dae-hwa, advisor of Samcheok Cultural Center (Grand Prize), and volunteer Lee Hyang-jin (Main Prize) have been selected for the 30th Samcheok Citizen Award in 2024.

Since August, Samcheok City has been accepting nominations for candidates eligible for the Samcheok Citizen Award, which honors contributions to the development of the local community, local culture, and promotion of arts, aiming to foster patriotism and sound civic consciousness. Afterward, in September, through deliberation among numerous candidates, the recipients of the Grand Prize and Main Prize were finalized.
The honorable Grand Prize recipient was confirmed as Kim Dae-hwa, advisor of Samcheok Cultural Center. Until February 2023, Kim served as the 8th to 10th president of the Samcheok Cultural Center and was recognized for achievements including winning the grand prize at the Gangwon-do Samulnori Competition, the highest award at the Gangwon-do Local Culture Research Presentation Contest, and the top prize at the Gangwon Folk Arts Festival?three major events hosted by the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Cultural Center.
Additionally, Kim received high praise for significant contributions to the cultural development of Samcheok, such as hosting the Jeongwol Daeboreum Development Symposium and the UNESCO registration of the Samcheok Gijuldari (Gijul Tug-of-War).
The Main Prize was awarded to volunteer Lee Hyang-jin. Lee has taken the lead in caring for local seniors through traffic volunteering on elementary school commuting routes, environmental cleanup, assisting senior outings, mobile bathing services, and meal support. Furthermore, Lee has participated as a volunteer in various events such as the Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival, Citizen’s Day, and Senior Citizens’ Day, setting a remarkable record of 1,563 volunteer sessions totaling 4,023 hours from 2013 to the present in 2024.

A Samcheok City official stated, “Although many candidates qualified to receive the Samcheok Citizen Award were nominated or recommended, the Grand Prize and Main Prize recipients were finalized through a fair evaluation process,” adding, “The Samcheok Citizen Award will be officially presented at the Samcheok Citizen’s Day event on October 14.”
