Cheonan City to Hold Memorial Ceremony for Ryu Gwansun on the 28th
Cheonan City Hall Launches Online Memorial Hall on Official Website
Cheonan City, Chungnam Province, announced that it will hold the "104th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony for Martyr Yu Gwansun" on the 28th.
This memorial ceremony, held to honor the spirit of Martyr Yu Gwansun on the anniversary of her death and to carry on the spirit of freedom and peace, will invite about 500 people including her family members. The event will proceed with a memorial address, offering of flowers and incense, and a group singing of the Yu Gwansun Song.
Additionally, the city will operate an online memorial hall through the Cheonan City website from the 23rd to the 28th, allowing people to pay tribute to Martyr Yu Gwansun remotely.
Mayor Park Sangdon said, "I hope the noble spirit of Martyr Yu Gwansun, who dedicated herself to Korean independence, will be widely carried on," and added, "For citizens who are unable to attend, please convey your respects to the martyr through the online memorial hall."
Meanwhile, Martyr Yu Gwansun, a native of Byeongcheon-myeon in Cheonan, led the Aunae Independence Movement on April 1, 1919, and was arrested by the Japanese authorities. She died on September 28 the following year due to aftereffects of torture.
In recognition of her contributions to the independence movement, Martyr Yu Gwansun was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1962. In 2019, as a symbol of the March 1st Movement, she was additionally honored with the Republic of Korea Medal for her role in uplifting national spirit and contributing to national unity.
