Choi Ikhyeon’s Clothing and More Designated as National Folk Cultural Heritage
High Value of Research Materials from the Late 19th Century
Chungnam Province announced on the 3rd that five items, including clothing worn by anti-Japanese militia leader Myeonam Choi Ikhyeon, have been designated as National Folk Cultural Heritage by the National Heritage Administration.
The designated artifacts include a Danryeong (official robe) personally worn by Choi Ikhyeon, a Samo (official hat), a Sapgeumdae (ornamental belt), a Hopae (identification tag), and Mokhwa (wooden shoes).
Myeonam Choi Ikhyeon, who had lived in Jeongsan, Cheongyang since 1900, led the anti-Japanese militia movement in Taein, Jeonbuk in 1906 in response to the Japanese invasion.
The National Heritage Administration explained that Choi Ikhyeon's historical significance is considerable, and the items have been designated as National Folk Heritage due to their high value as empirical materials for research on late 19th-century clothing history, craft techniques, and materials.
Kim Jaegyun, head of the Provincial Cultural Heritage Division, said, "The collective designation of Myeonam Choi Ikhyeon's official attire will serve as an opportunity to widely promote the many cultural heritages in the province," adding, "We hope that further research will allow these items to be used as materials for studying the clothing and craft techniques of that era."
