Ulsan Office of Education to Establish Yaksu High School on Former Yaksu Elementary School Site
Opening in March 2028 with 24 Classes for About 630 Students
Improved Long-Distance Commutes and Relief of Overcrowded Classes Expected
The Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Cheon Changsu) will establish "Yaksu High School" on the site where Yaksu Elementary School in Buk-gu is scheduled to relocate, with the goal of opening in March 2028.
Yaksu High School will be constructed by expanding and remodeling the Yaksu Elementary School building, with an investment of 27.3 billion won, to accommodate 24 classes and 632 students. High school students in Buk-gu have long struggled with overcrowded classes and long-distance commutes.
In particular, the Hogye and Jungsan areas, including Nongso 2-dong, have more students assigned to middle schools than high school capacity, resulting in overcrowded classes with more than 30 students per class. As a result, parents, local residents, and city council members have continuously demanded the establishment of a high school in Nongso 2-dong.
In response, the Ulsan Office of Education actively gathered opinions from local residents and, in line with improvements to the Ministry of Education's central investment review system, explored various options such as school relocation and utilizing closed school sites, ultimately deciding to use the Yaksu Elementary School site.
The plan to establish a high school on the Yaksu Elementary School site faced challenges due to exceeding the project budget, but a preliminary structural diagnosis found that partial expansion and remodeling were possible, allowing the project to proceed with only an internal investment review.
Last year, the Ministry of Education expanded the exemption from central investment review to include the establishment of schools with a total project cost of less than 30 billion won, new schools resulting from relocation or consolidation, and schools established through public or private investment.
