Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will promote ‘Visiting Environmental Education’ to help children, the future generation, respond wisely to climate change and develop environmental sensitivity.
‘Visiting Environmental Education’ is a high-quality ‘experiential environmental education’ that teaches through play. It was prepared to awaken children’s interest in the increasingly serious environment and to instill a sense of responsibility.
Recently, with record-breaking heatwaves and heavy rains causing massive loss of life and property damage due to climate disasters, raising awareness and practicing daily actions to overcome the climate crisis are more important than ever.
‘Visiting Environmental Education’ will be conducted until November, with environmental education specialists visiting about 80 daycare centers and kindergartens to conduct classes. The program focuses on delivering somewhat difficult concepts such as energy, climate crisis, and waste separation in an easy and fun way tailored to the level of young children.
First, the class draws children’s attention by showing videos and photos illustrating environmental pollution and the reality of the climate crisis. Then, through games, play, and drama, it stimulates interest so that children can naturally develop habits of environmental protection. Finally, through participatory activities such as making clay polar bears and Antarctic penguins, paper aquariums, and eco-bags, children strengthen their commitment to practicing environmental protection in daily life.
The district plans to expand the target audience of the ‘Visiting Environmental Education,’ which has so far focused on young children, to include elementary schools in the region next year. Since ‘climate change’ is no longer a future task, the aim is to raise children’s understanding of nature and the environment and provide opportunities to learn practical methods for a sustainable future, thereby nurturing environmental leaders of the future generation.
