Pukyong National University Conducts Future Research on Wireless Optical Communication Using Ultraviolet Rays, Gains International Attention
Professor Jung Yeonho's Team Publishes Paper in Top-Ranked JCR International Journal
Research on the development of future wireless optical communication technology using ultraviolet rays is receiving international attention.
The paper titled "A Comprehensive Survey on Optical Scattering Communications: Current Research, New Trends, and Future Vision" by Professor Jung Yeonho (Department of Information and Communication Engineering) and his research team at Pukyong National University was published in the recent issue (Vol. 26, No. 2) of an international academic journal (IF 34.4).
The international journal in which the paper was published is recognized as a top-tier journal (JCR ranking 1st) in the fields of electrical, electronic, and computer engineering.
Professor Jung Yeonho's research team comprehensively summarized five years of ultraviolet communication research conducted at the Mobile Transmission Systems Laboratory of Pukyong National University, and presented in this paper a technology roadmap, a summary of existing developed technologies, essential technologies for beginners, and the latest research trends.
Ultraviolet communication is gaining attention as a future technology to overcome the limitations of conventional radio frequency (RF) communication, such as regulations and costs. By utilizing ultraviolet rays in the 200?280 nm band, it is possible to implement indoor and outdoor wireless communication without interference from sunlight's ultraviolet rays, and it offers advantages such as ultra-compact equipment, low power consumption, and high security.
In this paper, the research team not only theoretically modeled a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication system using ultraviolet rays but also implemented it with actual hardware and conducted demonstration experiments to prove its feasibility. The team has filed patents for these research results in the United States and Korea, and also published them in another international journal (I.F. 7.9 / top 2.5%).
Additionally, in their pioneering research on indoor ultraviolet communication, the team theoretically implemented wireless transmission technology using indoor ultraviolet rays and demonstrated its technical potential; these results were also published in another international journal (I.F. 4.4).
Professor Jung Yeonho stated, "Ultraviolet communication, a scattering-based transmission technology, is expected to play an important role in next-generation optical wireless communication as a new alternative to radio frequency communication. We hope that this research will contribute to the advancement of future wireless communication."
For this paper, Professor Jung Yeonho served as the corresponding author, and Professor Sudhanshu Arya of Vellore Institute of Technology in India, a graduate of the Mobile Transmission Systems Laboratory at Pukyong National University, participated as the first author.
