"Preventing Wrong-Way Traffic Accidents"... Dobong-gu Installs Protective Barriers for Vehicles
Replacement of Pedestrian Protective Fence with Vehicle Protective Fence Boasting Durability to Withstand 8-Ton Vehicle Collisions... Initially Installed on Seondeokgo School Commuting Routes, Completion by September
Dobong-gu (District Mayor Oh Eon-seok) has taken action to prevent pedestrian accidents caused by vehicles driving in the wrong direction.
The district announced that it will replace pedestrian protective fences, which were primarily installed to prevent jaywalking, with vehicle protective fences that can prevent vehicle intrusion.
The vehicle protective fences being installed this time are much stronger than pedestrian fences, boasting high durability capable of withstanding an 8-ton vehicle colliding at 55 km/h at a 15-degree angle.
A district official stated, “We will first install the fences in areas urgently needing replacement after reviewing user distribution and pedestrian volume, and then gradually expand the installation zones by increasing the Seoul city budget and district funds.”
The pilot installation site is a roughly 120-meter section of the school route around Seondeok High School (a school protection zone). This area is a school-dense region with a high volume of student pedestrians from Seondeok Middle and High Schools, Seguru Fashion Design High School, and Dongbuk Elementary School.
The district plans to complete the installation in this area by September and then expand the installation zones based on residents’ feedback.
Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “We will continue to proactively respond to elements that pose risks in daily life to ensure the safety of our residents.”

In addition, the district is making various efforts to secure pedestrian safety. A representative project is the sidewalk expansion project on school routes. This year, the district renovated the school routes around Changdo Elementary School and the area from Ssangmun Elementary School to Hyomun Middle and High Schools. They expanded the sidewalk width by removing green strips and relocating utility poles and streetlights, and repaired sidewalks with poor flatness.
