The Cheonan City Government and the Cheonan Pear Horticultural Cooperative held a shipping ceremony for Haneul Green Cheonan pears at the Agricultural Products Distribution Center on the 13th.
The United States is the largest export market for Korean pears. The variety shipped on this day is Wonhwang, with a total shipment of 13.6 tons and an export value of $45,000. This year, it is expected that more than 2,700 tons will be exported to the United States under contract, and a total of about 3,500 tons worth $11.8 million will be exported to more than 10 countries, including Vietnam and Taiwan.
Haneul Green Cheonan pears first entered the U.S. market in 1986 with an export volume of 43 tons and later pioneered the export markets of Australia in 1999, Mexico in 2014, and Canada in 2019.
In particular, last year, Cheonan accounted for 58% of Korea's total pear exports to the United States, ranking first nationwide and emerging as the leading export base for Korean pears. Last year, the Cheonan Pear Horticultural Cooperative exported 3,219 tons worth $10.848 million, accounting for 60% of Cheonan's total pear exports.
A city official said, "With favorable pear growth and weather conditions in the first half of this year, we expect Cheonan's pear production to increase by more than 20% compared to last year. We will continue to implement various export support policies, such as fostering export organizations and supporting joint grading costs, to vitalize agricultural exports."
