On the 10th (local time), Kim Hong-yeol lost 0-2 (2-7, 3-6) in round scores to the Dutch rising star Leirau Demirer (Lee) in the men's breaking group stage C match held at Place de la Concorde in Paris, France.
In this tournament with 16 participants, the group stage is divided into 4 groups. The top 2 from each group advance to the quarterfinal knockout stage.
The matches are conducted as one-on-one dance battles, with the winner being the dancer who receives more votes from 9 judges. The scoring criteria are mainly based on five aspects: technique, variety, originality, execution, and musicality.
In the group stage, if the two round scores are tied 1-1, the total votes received in both rounds determine the winner. From the quarterfinals onward, three rounds are held.
Born in 1984, Kim Hong-yeol is called a 'living legend' in the world of breaking. He started dancing in 1998 when he was in the second year of middle school and has been active on the world stage since 2001. He has won the Red Bull BC One World Final, regarded as the most prestigious competition, three times (2006, 2013, 2023).
He also won a silver medal in the breaking category at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games (AG) held last year.
Breaking will not be included as an official event in the 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Games, so this tournament may be his first and last Olympic competition.
