Park Sangwon from Yangsan Wins Gold in Men's Team Fencing at Paris Olympics
Native of Naeseok Village, Sangbuk-myeon, Yangsan-si
Yangsan City, Gyeongnam announced that among the men's national team (Oh Sanguk, Gu Bongil, Park Sangwon, Do Gyeongdong) who achieved a remarkable feat by winning the gold medal in the men's team sabre event at the 2024 Paris Olympics on the 1st (Korean time), Park Sangwon (23) is a native of Yangsan.
Male national team fencers who achieved a three-peat in the Olympic men's sabre team event, following the 2012 London and 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

What is particularly noteworthy is that Park Sangwon, the youngest member of the fencing team, is from Naeseok Village in Sangbuk-myeon, Yangsan City, Gyeongnam. His grandfather, Park Seongbyeong (87), who currently resides in Naeseok Village, said, "I am proud that my grandson Sangwon has brought great joy to the nation by representing Korea," and added, "I am also grateful to the citizens of Yangsan and the residents of Naeseok Village who stayed up all night together to cheer him on, even during the early morning hours."
Mayor Na Dongyeon said, "I sincerely congratulate Park Sangwon on winning the gold medal, delivering inspiration to the nation despite difficult circumstances," and continued, "I am especially proud that a player from Yangsan has achieved such a significant accomplishment for Korea. I hope this energy will create a positive synergy for the development of Yangsan and the unity of its citizens."
Park Sangwon played the role of a hidden card, joining forces with his distinguished senior teammates to win the gold medal. He has proven himself as a promising next-generation fencer who will lead the sport at the 2028 LA Olympics, where Korea will aim for a fourth consecutive victory.
