Seoul Jung-gu Operates 'Cooling Fog' to Beat the Heat in 4 Parks
Cooling fog lowers surrounding temperature by about 3-5 degrees
Seven cooling fog systems scheduled to operate this year
Jung-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gil-seong) has installed cooling fog systems in four parks to help residents cool down during the hot weather. The cooling fog systems recently completed a pilot operation and will run from around the end of the rainy season on the 15th until September 30.
The four newly installed locations are Dasan Children's Park, Donghwa Resident Park, Son Ki-jeong Sports Park, and Sunhwa Cultural Park. These parks are located near residential areas and apartments, making them popular spots for residents.
The mist sprayed from the cooling fog systems evaporates upon contact with the hot air, lowering the surrounding temperature by about 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the water particles are so fine that they evaporate before touching the skin or clothes, so they do not cause wetness. The system also helps prevent flying insects from approaching and reduces dust generation.
At Dasan Children's Park, Donghwa Resident Park, and Sunhwa Cultural Park, stationary misting devices called ‘Mist Bars’ have been installed on pavilions and shade structures, allowing residents to sit in the shade and enjoy the cool mist while chatting.
The ‘Rod-type Cooling Fog’ installed at Son Ki-jeong Sports Park sprays mist along the walking paths to help residents move comfortably. Including these newly installed cooling fog systems, the district plans to operate a total of seven cooling fog systems this year.
Additionally, at Sunhwa Cultural Park, shade structures have been installed over exercise equipment so residents can work out while avoiding the hot eul sunlight. At Seosomun History and Culture Park, a smart shade that automatically opens and closes based on time and temperature has been installed to quickly respond to changing weather conditions.
District Mayor Kim Gil-seong stated, “We will carefully provide daily support so that residents can stay comfortable even during the heatwave.”
