Dongmyung University to Host 'Cheongnam Calligraphy Grand Prize National Contest'
Calligraphers Nationwide Compete with 168 Works
Dongmyung University held the 35th Cheongnam Calligraphy Grand Prize National Competition on the 7th. Calligraphers from across the country participated, showcasing their skills with a total of 168 works in seven categories: Hangul, Hanja, Literary Painting, Woodblock Calligraphy, Folk Painting, Small Character, and Seal Engraving.
Co-hosted by Dongmyung University and the Cheongnam Cultural Association, the Cheongnam Calligraphy Exhibition is held annually to honor the high calligraphic spirit of Cheongnam Oh Jaebong and to commemorate his contributions to the history of Korean calligraphy.
The event also aims to broaden the base of calligraphy, provide opportunities for emerging calligraphers to debut, and support the discovery and creative activities of talented new artists through grants. Notably, starting this year, the competition required participants to create their works on-site, enhancing fairness as well as adding vibrancy and tension to the event.
The competition featured a calligraphy demonstration by President Jeon Howan of Dongmyung University, as well as various programs including discussions and evaluations by renowned calligraphy experts. The total prize money amounted to 6 million KRW (Grand Prize: 3 million KRW, Excellence Awards: 500,000 KRW each for six recipients). The results will be announced on the Cheongnam Cultural Association’s website.
The selected outstanding works will be exhibited at the first-floor gallery of the Busan Design Promotion Agency from August 19 to 24. The awards ceremony will be held at the same venue on the final day, August 24.
