Kang Wiwon, the standing representative of the Democratic Party of Korea's National Innovation Council who announced his candidacy for the chairman of the Democratic Party's Gwangju Metropolitan City Committee, expressed his determination to make Gwangju a textbook for the era of party member sovereignty.
On the 6th, Kang attended the '2024 Gwangju Youth Sovereignty Talk Concert' hosted by the Gwangju Youth Association as a special guest.
About 200 young people and citizens from Gwangju attended the event, where Representative Kang gave a lecture and held a talk concert on the theme of 'The Role of Youth in the Era of Party Member Sovereignty.'
The event was hosted by Dr. Seo Seungman, a comedian and the first co-representative of the Innovation Council, with political commentator Park Jinyoung and National Assembly member Yang Moonseok participating as guests.
Notably, prominent pro-Lee Jae-myung (pro-Lee Jae-myung faction) lawmakers also took part in the talk concert, drawing attention.
Lawmakers who served alongside Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, including Lee Jaegang, who was the Peace Vice Governor, Hwang Myungseon, a three-term mayor of Nonsan City and currently the Deputy General Secretary in charge of party organization management, Yang Moonseok, and Kim Donga, a former lawyer for the Daejang-dong case who was elected through a 'youth open audition,' visited Gwangju to support Representative Kang.
Analysts say the consecutive visits to Gwangju by key pro-Lee Jae-myung lawmakers ahead of the Gwangju City Committee chairman election demonstrate Representative Kang's standing.
Moreover, these lawmakers have voiced critical opinions against local lawmakers' collusion to unanimously endorse a candidate for the city committee chairman.
A representative from Kang Wiwon's camp stated, "What can the youth of Gwangju learn when first-term lawmakers become entrenched local powers, citing customs once elected?" and added, "To end this vicious cycle, the party members in Gwangju must take the lead."
Representative Kang said, "Sovereignty, the right of the owner, means the ultimate decision-making power. The era of party member sovereignty is when party members' opinions are asked and decisions are made," and added, "It is unbelievable that Gwangju is a place where eight lawmakers colluded without even asking the party members' opinions, going against the era of party member sovereignty."
