Opposition and Ruling Party Debate Over Leadership System Reform... "Re-discussion from Scratch on the 10th"
Discussion on Revising the Election Rules for 'Adjusting the Public Opinion Reflection Ratio' Also at an Impasse
The People Power Party discussed the reorganization of the leadership system, including the two-person leadership system proposed by Emergency Committee Chairman Hwang Woo-yeo, on the 7th but failed to reach a conclusion. This was due to ongoing debates between supporters and opponents regarding the side effects and legitimacy of the leadership system reorganization.
Yeo Sang-gyu, chairman of the People Power Party's Special Committee on Party Rules Revision, told reporters after the special committee meeting at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, that "no conclusion has been reached."
Earlier, Chairman Hwang officially proposed the two-person leadership system on the 5th. This aims to strengthen internal stability by learning from the confusion caused by the collapse of the leadership after six changes in party leaders and emergency committee chairs over two years since the launch of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration. The core of the two-person leadership system is that the first-place winner at the party convention becomes the party leader, the second-place winner becomes the senior supreme council member, and if the party leader resigns, the senior supreme council member assumes the party leader position.

In particular, there are suspicions that this proposal is a 'check on Han Dong-hoon,' as forecasts suggest that former Emergency Committee member Han Dong-hoon has a high chance of winning if he runs for party leader.
Na Kyung-won, also considered a potential next party leader candidate, expressed opposition to the collective and two-person leadership systems. On Facebook that day, Na stated, "(The collective leadership system) is not desirable for our party's future, innovation, and unity. The so-called hybrid system is also not a proper alternative," adding, "We must follow the right path. The existing single leadership system is more suitable for practicing responsible politics and demonstrating stable leadership."
It is reported that the response to the leadership system change was cold even during the meeting that day. Chairman Yeo explained, "We started discussing whether to go with a single leadership system, a two-person leadership system, or a collective leadership system, but opinions such as 'it is inappropriate to discuss the leadership system in a hastily formed special committee ahead of the party convention' were expressed first, and various opinions were voiced before the leadership system discussion, so we could not reach an agreement."
The issue of adjusting the 'ratio of party members' will to public opinion' in the party convention also failed to reach a conclusion. Chairman Yeo said, "The 8 (party members) to 2 (public opinion) ratio and the 7 to 3 ratio are very close, and both sides have grounds and logic," adding, "Some argued for a 5 to 5 ratio to properly show the party supporting the people."

The special committee plans to resume its meeting on the morning of the 10th to reconsider the leadership system change and the ratio of reflecting public opinion from scratch, aiming to reach a conclusion by the 11th, the day before the special committee's activities end. In particular, if the special committee fails to reach a conclusion, the leadership system change will be scrapped. Chairman Yeo commented, "Even if we do not reach a conclusion, we must discuss it, and the discussions will be made to positively contribute to the party."
