Kakao Hosts Event to Commemorate 'World Environment Day'
Carbon Index and Social Carbon Reduction Volume Disclosure
Kakao and its affiliates announced on the 5th that they will conduct various campaigns and events to commemorate 'World Environment Day.'
Kakao announced the 'Kakao Carbon Index' and 'Social Carbon Reduction Amount,' which quantify users' contributions to the environment through various Kakao services in 2023.
The 2023 Carbon Index was calculated at 54 million KUC (Kakao Users’ Carbon reduction). The Carbon Index reflects user environmental contribution data from various Kakao services, including ▲120 million electronic document conversions via KakaoPay and KakaoTalk Wallet ▲a total travel distance of 37 million km by KakaoMap bicycles and KakaoT bikes ▲a total travel distance of 450 million km by KakaoT electric taxis and electric vehicles ▲4.4 million products repurposed from discarded items ▲2.9 million purchases of green-labeled products through KakaoTalk Gift and Kakao Makers ▲and the use of phone-based Tok Student IDs instead of plastic student IDs.
This year, in collaboration with Seoul National University Climate Tech Center, Kakao conducted research on principles and methodologies to calculate the carbon reduction amount achievable when users utilize corporate services, functions, or information, and disclosed a reliable 'Social Carbon Reduction Amount.' The 2023 'Social Carbon Reduction Amount' totals 27,000 tons. This is equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of approximately 200,000 trees or a forest the size of 230 soccer fields.
To participate in the spirit of World Environment Day, Kakao is running various campaigns and events that users can join. Kakao Makers is conducting the 'Sterile Pack Recycling Project' with Maeil Dairies, which recycles used sterile packs. Participants must submit at least 30 sterile packs; they will receive Makers coupons, and customers submitting more than 50 packs will additionally receive Maeil Dairies Amazing Oat products.
