Japanese Telecom KDDI to Provide Mobile Communication Service on the Moon by 2030
Japanese mobile telecommunications company KDDI has announced plans to provide high-speed mobile communication services such as 5G on the Moon by 2030.
According to NHK and Nihon Keizai Shimbun on the 30th, KDDI held a press conference and announced a program to provide high-speed mobile communication services on the lunar surface by 2030. Space-related startups and large corporations will jointly participate.
KDDI plans to develop robots to maintain base stations on the lunar surface and maintain these stations so that astronauts and exploration vehicles can be connected via high-speed data communication.
They also stated that by 2028, they will commercialize large-capacity communication technology between the Moon and Earth.
Thirteen major companies, including Suntory, Sumitomo Real Estate, and Mitsui & Co., have expressed their intention to participate in this plan.

Hiromichi Matsuda, Executive Director of KDDI, said, "We consider this a pioneering investment," adding, "Communication is absolutely necessary when humanity goes to the Moon."
