ETRI Receives 'Presidential Citation' at Inventors' Day Ceremony
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) received the Presidential Citation at the Inventors' Day ceremony.
On the 22nd, ETRI announced that it was awarded the Presidential Citation at this year's '59th Inventors' Day' ceremony for its contributions to strengthening national competitiveness through the creation and utilization of intellectual property. This is the second time ETRI has received the Presidential Citation on Inventors' Day, following the 48th ceremony in 2013.
Previously, ETRI established the first patent strategy among public institutions in 2004 and has continuously advanced its patent management strategies, including the '5th Patent Strategy Establishment' in 2020 and the 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Patent Strategy Establishment' in 2021.
Additionally, ETRI has created and nurtured high-quality patents through ▲ phased implementation of Intellectual Property-Research and Development (IP-R&D) ▲ providing close support services for researchers' patents ▲ patent packaging in promising AI fields ▲ strengthening patent infrastructure.
Currently, ETRI holds a total of 14,154 registered patents. Among these, 7,293 are international patents registered in 52 countries overseas. ETRI ranks first worldwide in the number of international patent families (IPFs) related to 4th Industrial Revolution technologies, overseen by the European Patent Office (EPO), demonstrating outstanding capabilities in intellectual property. The cumulative technology royalties achieved by ETRI to date amount to 1,167.4 billion KRW.
ETRI has also secured 1,077 international standard patents. As the fifth largest holder of standard patents announced by the three major international standard organizations, ETRI is recognized for strengthening international leadership in the field of international standardization and contributing to raising the global recognition of domestic technologies.
Notably, the achievement of 1,540 technology transfers and patent licensing revenue (technology royalty income) of 294 billion KRW over the past five years goes beyond mere numbers, demonstrating that ETRI's R&D outcomes are being converted into actual economic value.
This performance accounts for 42.4% of the total technology royalty income of all 25 government-funded research institutes. Of particular note is that 1,451 billion KRW (49.4%) of the total 294 billion KRW technology royalty income was received from overseas companies.
