The ‘A Handful of Soil Pumasi Volunteer Group’ is a specialized volunteer program that recruits volunteers who wish to help farms in need of labor and connects them. The name is derived from ‘Pumasi,’ which means helping each other with hard work and repaying the favor.
The ‘Pumasi’ volunteer service is even more special in that farm owners receiving volunteer help donate a portion of the harvested crops to the Mapo Welfare Foundation. The donated crops are used for the ‘Hyo-do Bapsang’ lunch meals for elderly people aged 75 and over living alone in the area.
An official from the district said, “Recently, more families are operating small weekend farms even in urban areas,” and added, “We ask for active participation in the Pumasi volunteer activities, which offer the rewarding experience of donating the harvest from weekend farms to neighbors.”
The ‘A Handful of Soil Pumasi Volunteers’ are recruited on an ongoing basis by the district. Volunteers assist with activities such as ▲planting seedlings ▲sorting ▲managing cultivation facilities ▲harvesting ▲pest and disease control ▲collecting waste vinyl, especially during the spring and autumn seasons when labor is particularly needed or in case of typhoon and heavy rain damage.
Additionally, farms to participate in the project are being recruited until May 24. Farms must be located within a 30 km round-trip radius from Mapo-gu Office (212 World Cup Buk-ro) and agree to donate some selected harvested vegetables to the Mapo Welfare Foundation.
The district plans to make the final selection of participating farms through on-site inspections of the farms that apply. Those who wish to participate as volunteers or donating farm owners or have inquiries can contact or visit the Mapo-gu Volunteer Center.
Currently, about 1,000 elderly people living alone in Mapo-gu use the Hyo-do Bapsang service. The district expects that through Pumasi volunteering, donated crops will supply healthy ingredients for the Hyo-do Bapsang meals and help reduce the budget.
