Jeju Coast Guard Conducts Joint Training to Enhance Maritime Accident Response Capabilities
Jeju Coast Guard Station (Chief So Byung-yong) announced on the 21st that it conducted a joint civil-government training exercise to improve the response capabilities of ferry and fishing vessel operators and maritime accident response, simulating a collision between the ferry (Biyangdoho) traveling between Hallim Port and Biyangdo and a fishing vessel near Biyangdo the previous day.
The emergency preparedness training, organized by the Maritime Safety Division of Jeju Coast Guard Station, was conducted under the assumption that the Biyangdoho, carrying about 30 passengers, collided with a fishing vessel and was sinking, with an urgent rescue request reported. The training involved three ferry crew members and police officers from Hallim Police Substation.
The main training contents included ▲ confirming evacuation locations for onboard rescue and emergency escape ▲ guiding passenger evacuation ▲ mastering the use of various lifesaving equipment ▲ providing first aid to the injured ▲ rescuing persons fallen into the sea, focusing on emergency response methods in case of accidents.
Additionally, in front of the ferry terminal waiting room at Hallim Port, Jeju City, a ‘Disaster Safety Experience Zone’ was operated in collaboration with the Jeju Red Cross, offering various disaster-related experiences such as CPR training, trying on life jackets, and VR disaster safety experiences, providing the public with opportunities to directly feel and experience these activities.
A representative of Jeju Coast Guard Station said, “We hope this serves as an opportunity to strengthen accident response capabilities through continuous joint training between ferry operators and the Coast Guard so that the public can use ferries with peace of mind,” adding, “We will do our best to protect the precious lives and property of the public.”
