View original imageOn the 17th (local time) at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 40,043.59, up 134.21 points (0.34%) from the previous closing price. Other major indices included the Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 index, which rose 6.17 points (0.12%) to 5303.27, while the Nasdaq Composite Index fell 12.35 points (0.07%) to close at 16,685.97.

This was the first time the Dow Jones closed above the 40,000 mark. The previous day, it had briefly surpassed 40,051.05 during intraday trading but fell back to close at 39,869.38. However, on this day, it maintained support and successfully broke through the 40,000 mark just before the market closed.
