Gwanak-gu, Rainwater Inlet Maintenance with All Residents Before Heavy Rainfall
May 14 Community Self-Cleaning Linked to Simultaneous Maintenance of Storm Drains in All 21 Neighborhoods
Focused Removal of Foreign Substances Like Cigarette Butts and Fallen Leaves Deposited in Storm Drains to Ensure Smooth Drainage Function
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) conducted a ‘Rainwater Drain Maintenance’ event with residents on the 16th to prevent flood damage caused by the upcoming summer heavy rains.
The district has been taking proactive measures every year by expanding the frequency of rainwater drain maintenance and dredging to ensure smooth drainage functions of rainwater drains, prevent flood damage, and stop odors caused by trash.
In particular, this ‘Rainwater Drain Maintenance’ was carried out as a public-private joint effort in conjunction with the residents’ voluntary cleaning held on the third Thursday of every month.
From as early as 7:30 a.m., about 1,000 local residents including professional groups and members of Cheongjeong Samteo Ikgeumi, along with Gwanak-gu office staff, gathered in all 21 neighborhoods of Gwanak-gu to conduct a thorough cleaning by focusing on removing foreign substances such as cigarette butts and fallen leaves accumulated in the rainwater drains.
On the day, Mayor Park Jun-hee also visited ‘Nangok-dong,’ which has about 220 rainwater drains, divided into groups with residents to clean the drains, and had a valuable time listening to residents’ opinions on major district policies.
Mayor Park Jun-hee expressed his gratitude to the residents who participated in the early morning voluntary cleaning, saying, “Our Gwanak-gu is making every effort to prevent flood damage this year as well,” and added, “Rainwater drains play an important role in preventing flooding during heavy rain, so I ask all residents to always remove the covers and actively cooperate in cleaning the surroundings to ensure the drains function properly.”
Gwanak-gu has been operating a disaster countermeasures headquarters for flood and wind disaster preparedness from May 15 to October 15 for five months and has entered an emergency duty system.
In April, to prevent casualties or property damage caused by typhoons and heavy rains, the district thoroughly strengthened safety management by inspecting vulnerable facilities such as large construction sites, advertisements, and slope facilities, as well as major disaster prevention facilities like retention tanks and rainwater pumping stations, and completing preemptive measures for any deficiencies.
The district will continue operating the ‘Flood Disaster Vulnerable Accompaniment Partner,’ which has been in place since last year to prepare for emergencies. The ‘Flood Disaster Vulnerable Accompaniment Partner’ is a resident collaboration group formed to prevent human damage among 321 vulnerable households in the district, including severely disabled persons and elderly residents living in semi-basement homes. They respond on-site from the flood forecast stage to ensure the safety of vulnerable residents.
Additionally, the district operates a ‘Free Installation Support for Flood Prevention Facilities’ targeting building owners or tenants of houses at risk of flooding within the area.
The district plans to accept applications for buildings (houses, commercial buildings) at risk of flood damage until Thursday, October 31, and complete the installation of flood prevention facilities by the end of this year.
