Growing Interest in Future-Oriented Eco-Friendly New Products and AI-Based Digital Platforms
Samsung Heavy Industries held a technology roadshow in Europe for the second consecutive year, unveiling the latest eco-friendly and digital shipbuilding technologies.
On the 15th (local time), Samsung Heavy Industries held the '2024 Samsung Technical Seminar in Athens' at the InterContinental Hotel in Athens, Greece, showcasing new products and AI-based digital ship technologies aimed at achieving carbon neutrality (net zero).

This year's Athens technology roadshow was attended by more than 60 representatives from 30 major European shipowners, classification societies, and partners.
The future-type LNG carrier introduced by Samsung Heavy Industries featured the independently developed air resistance reduction device (SAVER WIND) and wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS), with the wheelhouse positioned at the bow to enhance operational efficiency. The vessel’s eco-friendly performance was also strengthened by equipping a clean fuel system.

View original imageAdditionally, Samsung Heavy Industries unveiled for the first time the development roadmap for an ammonia carrier equipped with an ammonia fuel cell and an eco-friendly LCO2 carrier fitted with onboard carbon capture equipment (OCCS). New 180K㎥ and 200K㎥ 3Cargo Tank LNG carriers were also introduced.
Moreover, the 'Digital Vessel Operation Solution (SVESSL 2.0)', which provides real-time optimal route and speed information using AI deep learning, big data analysis, and digital twin technology, and 'DT-SLM (Digital Twin-Ship Lifecycle Management)', which offers performance management and predictive maintenance functions for key onboard equipment, attracted significant attention.
The technology roadshow also featured joint participation from the Korean Register (KR) and Panasia, a specialist environmental equipment company, who presented on the direction of eco-friendly regulatory responses in the shipbuilding and shipping industry and the development status of onboard carbon capture demonstration facilities, demonstrating close cooperation with Samsung Heavy Industries.
