Government Conducts Pre-Inspection of Summer Disasters Such as Typhoons and Heavy Rain Ahead of the Jangma Season
Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Holds Meeting to Review Preventive Measures in Agriculture Sector
The government will conduct preliminary inspections of water management facilities in the agricultural sector, as well as livestock and quarantine areas vulnerable to landslides, ahead of this summer's rainy season.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced that Vice Minister Han Hoon held a meeting on the 13th at the Agricultural Disaster Countermeasure Situation Room to review preventive measures in the agricultural sector against summer disasters such as typhoons and heavy rain.
A ministry official explained, "According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, this summer is also expected to see strong heavy rain due to atmospheric instability and an increased likelihood of typhoon impacts on the Korean Peninsula due to rising sea surface temperatures. It is time to fully prepare for summer disasters before late June, the peak of the rainy season."
The meeting was attended by disaster response agencies including relevant departments of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Rural Development Administration, the Korea Forest Service, and the Korea Rural Community Corporation, where they discussed the promotion of special inspections to prevent damage to vulnerable facilities and areas in sectors such as water management, horticulture, livestock, quarantine, and forestry.
By sector, the plans include ▲ inspecting the condition and emergency systems of 518 aging reservoirs, 1,366 drainage pumping stations, and 4,100 km of drainage channels in water management facilities ▲ checking the condition of facilities and emergency evacuation routes for residents in 28,400 landslide-prone areas ▲ inspecting blockage and erosion in 1,487 vulnerable mountain solar power facilities ▲ inspecting drainage channels and facility bindings in 7,629 orchards and greenhouses that have suffered damage in the past three years ▲ and inspecting drainage maintenance and removal of risk factors in 1,221 vulnerable livestock facilities.
After the preliminary inspections of vulnerable facilities, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will maintain a cooperative system with the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters, local governments, the Rural Development Administration, the Korea Forest Service, the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, and other disaster response agencies centered on the summer disaster countermeasure situation room, managing disaster preparedness 24 hours a day. They will also establish a full-scale readiness system for rapid emergency recovery and disaster support in case of damage.
