Gyeonggi Province recently relocated the Gyeonggi Northern Disabled Victims Shelter from Pocheon City to Dongducheon City.

According to the ‘Disabled Welfare Act,’ Gyeonggi Province operates one dedicated shelter each in the southern and northern regions for abused disabled individuals. However, the existing northern shelter, while meeting legal facility standards, was too small to accommodate the full legal admission capacity. Additionally, the shelter was located in an old house without an elevator, causing inconvenience such as wheelchair users having to use a temporary ramp.
In response, Gyeonggi Province signed a business agreement with Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) in November last year to improve the environment of the shelter for disabled victims. With a provincial budget investment of 200 million KRW, support was provided for rental housing deposit payments, interior remodeling, and furniture and appliances for shelter operation, creating conditions for residents to receive treatment and live in a comfortable environment.
The relocated shelter complies with the ‘Disabled Welfare Act,’ featuring a building area of over 66㎡ with necessary facilities for disabled residents such as a living room, counseling room, and restroom. It is also fully equipped with an elevator to ensure convenient and safe movement for wheelchair users. Furthermore, the space was expanded from one unit to three units, allowing residents to secure independent personal spaces.
Kim Young-hee, Director of the Disabled Welfare Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Residents experienced many inconveniences due to the poor facility conditions of the northern abused disabled shelter, but with the relocation, conditions have been established for disabled victims in the northern region to recover stably. We will continue to promote various policies to protect abused disabled individuals and strive to eradicate abuse against the disabled."
