Second Military Reconnaissance Satellite Launch Success [Yang Nak-gyu's Defence Club]
24-Hour Reconnaissance of North Korea Regardless of Weather
First Communication Scheduled with Domestic and International Ground Stations
Our military has successfully launched its second military reconnaissance satellite. From now on, it will be able to monitor North Korean territory 24 hours a day regardless of weather conditions.
According to the military on the 8th, the reconnaissance satellite was launched at 8:17 a.m. (Korean time; 7:17 p.m. local time on the 7th) from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, USA. Like the first reconnaissance satellite, it was launched aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 launch vehicle.
About 45 minutes after launch, at around 9:02 a.m., it successfully entered orbit. The first communication with the domestic ground station is scheduled for 5:53 p.m. that day. After operational test evaluations such as image focusing and calibration, the reconnaissance satellite will be fully operational by the second half of this year.
Unlike the first reconnaissance satellite equipped with electro-optical (EO) and infrared (IR) imaging equipment, the second reconnaissance satellite is equipped with a high-performance imaging radar (SAR), also known as synthetic aperture radar. SAR works by transmitting electromagnetic waves to ground targets and synthesizing the reflected signal data to create images, enabling day and night imaging regardless of weather conditions. Additionally, while EO and IR satellites orbit the Earth in sun-synchronous orbits, SAR satellites orbit in inclined orbits designed to optimize visits to specific areas.
