Monthly Storm Drain Cleaning Day Held with Frequent Cleanings to Fully Prepare for Heavy Rainfall
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced on March 27 that it will conduct a "Spring Cleaning of Rainwater Drains" to prevent flood damage during the rainy season.
Rainwater drains installed on the roads can cause foul odors and spoil the appearance due to illegal dumping of various wastes such as cigarette butts and food waste, causing significant inconvenience to residents' living environments.
Additionally, if rainwater drains and sewer pipes become clogged with garbage, it becomes difficult to discharge rainwater during rainfall. Furthermore, covers installed arbitrarily to block odors from decomposing debris can block the rainwater drain inlets, potentially causing flooding damage to roadside and low-lying houses.
In response, the district plans to conduct a thorough cleaning of rainwater drains by dividing the area into two sections centered around Dangsan 1-dong, with a total of about 60 personnel including rainwater drain dredging contractors and district office staff, welcoming the upcoming spring.
During this activity, the district will remove accumulated waste and grime deposited in the rainwater drains during the winter season, collect arbitrarily installed covers, and inspect the odor blocking devices installed inside the drains to prepare for heavy rains during the rainy season.
Moreover, the district will carry out promotional activities to prohibit dumping garbage into rainwater drains and improve public awareness regarding rainwater drains.
In addition, the district continuously strives to prepare for flood damage by holding monthly rainwater drain cleaning days by neighborhood, conducting frequent cleaning in flood-prone areas, and permanently assigning dedicated personnel to rainwater drains in areas densely populated with restaurants. As a result, last year, it received an excellence award among Seoul’s autonomous districts for its flood disaster safety measures.
