On the 24th (local time), the British daily The Guardian reported that the remains of a woman buried with jewels, sharp arrowheads, a bronze dagger, and a war club-shaped weapon called jeongon (戰棍), which has nails hammered into its end, were found in a Bronze Age communal cemetery in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan.
Archaeologists suggested that the woman excavated this time could be a warrior from the legendary female tribe, the Amazon Kingdom, who lived about 4,000 years ago.
In Greek mythology, the Amazons were female warriors living on the edges of the known world and were beings of fear. The Amazon, or the plural Amazones tribe, is known as a society composed only of women. This tribe is said to have been inhabited by brave female warriors skilled in using bows and arrows.
"The Truth Behind Greek Legends and Myths"
Although they are said to have existed during the Trojan War period in the 12th century BC, no definite ruins supporting their existence had been discovered. However, historian Bethany Hughes evaluated the newly discovered remains as "showing that truth lies behind ancient Greek legends and myths."
She added, "Attention should also be paid to the fact that remains presumed to be Amazon female warriors have been found several times in regions near the borders of Russia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan."
Previously discovered remains showed traces indicating that women extensively used bows and arrows. The excavated female remains showed twisted finger shapes, which can be seen as a result of excessive use of arrows. Additionally, a widened pelvis due to horseback riding was commonly observed.
Hughes analyzed, "This shows continuous horseback riding and archery," and added, "A necklace made of carnelian was also excavated along with the remains at the Nakhchivan communal cemetery site, which means the owner of the grave was a person of high status."
