Chinese Netizens Reach 1.1 Billion... Internet Penetration Rate Approaches 80%
Chinese authorities announced on the 22nd that the number of internet users in China is approximately 1.1 billion, with an internet penetration rate approaching 80%.
The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, released the "53rd Statistical Report on China's Internet Development" on the same day, according to Chinese state-run Xinhua News Agency and other foreign media.
According to the report, as of December last year, the number of internet users in China reached 1.092 billion, an increase of 24.8 million compared to the previous year.

The internet penetration rate rose by 1.9 percentage points during the same period to 77.5%. Notably, the penetration rate in rural areas reached 66.5%, up 4.6 percentage points from the previous year, narrowing the internet access gap between urban and rural areas.
