Although the city has grown into a large metropolis with a population of 1 million, it still operates under an inefficient administrative system based on eup, myeon, and dong units. The plan is to reorganize it into a system of four general districts (gu).
Mayor Jeong made these remarks on the 21st at the '24th Hwaseong Citizens' Day' ceremony held in the city hall auditorium. The ceremony was attended by leaders of civic organizations, Kim Kyung-hee, chairperson of the city council, members of the National Assembly, and commendations were awarded to exemplary citizens who contributed to the city's development.
In his commemorative speech, Mayor Jeong emphasized, "When Hwaseong was promoted to city status in 2001, it was a small city with a population of 210,000 and a budget of 250 billion KRW. In just 23 years, it has grown to a population of 1 million, a financial scale of 4 trillion KRW, ranked first nationwide in regional gross domestic product, and first in annual export volume within the province, emerging as a hub for the nation's future strategic industries." He added, "The distinct characteristics of Hwaseong by region have been the foundation for its development."
Mayor Jeong also expressed his strong commitment to actively addressing the low birthrate issue. He stated, "Our city had the highest number of newborns nationwide last year, but we cannot neglect the ultra-low birthrate and population cliff problems. Hwaseong City will take the lead in solving the ultra-low birthrate issue that our society faces for the future of South Korea."
He further noted, "Hwaseong City is leading smart administration by introducing AI technology in the administrative sector," adding, "We will continue to actively incorporate the latest trends to realize a safe and convenient smart city."
