Gwangju Buk-gu Removes Yongbongcheon Overpass for the Safety of Transportation-Vulnerable Groups
On the 21st, Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it will commence the 'Yongbongcheon Overpass Demolition Project' near the fashion street in Yongbong-dong.
The Yongbongcheon overpass is a road facility completed in 1998, measuring 3 meters in width and 24.7 meters in length. Due to severe aging, it has been detracting from the urban landscape. There have been continuous complaints requesting its demolition as it is difficult for vulnerable road users to pass through.
Accordingly, Buk-gu decided to demolish the overpass after gathering opinions from related organizations such as the Gwangju Police Agency, Bukbu Police Station, Road Traffic Authority, Yongju Elementary School, and local residents.
The demolition work will be carried out at night to minimize the impact on vehicle flow. The project budget will utilize the special grant of 250 million won secured in October last year.

In the future, pedestrian crossings and traffic lights will be installed to replace the overpass, and the nearby sidewalks will be renovated together, which is expected to improve walking convenience for vulnerable road users.
