Naver "Immediate Deletion of Election Law Violation Comments... Display of Correction Report Requests"
Correction Request Can Be Processed Online
Reply Count Limited to 10 per Person
South Korea's largest portal site Naver has taken steps to manage the news search window and comment section ahead of the April National Assembly elections.
Comments violating election laws will be immediately deleted, and users repeatedly caught will be restricted from posting comments. Additionally, news articles with requested corrections will be displayed in the search window.
On the 15th, Naver announced that it will enhance accessibility to pages for requesting news corrections, rebuttals, and follow-up reports in accordance with recommendations from the News Innovation Forum. Various comment policy reforms, such as adjusting the number of replies one person can write per article and strengthening measures against commenters violating election laws, will be applied sequentially.
First, Naver will prepare various measures to allow users who have suffered defamation or rights infringement through media reports to request corrections, rebuttals, and follow-up reports.
The existing procedure, which required submission via written documents or registered mail, will be improved to allow easy online processing. To increase accessibility to correction requests, Naver plans to notify users through PC and mobile banners as well as a dedicated page.
When requesting corrections, a notice indicating the request will be displayed at the top of the Naver News article body. The phrase "Correction Request Pending" will also be shown in news search results. Furthermore, Naver will request news providers to temporarily close comments on articles for which correction requests have been received.
Technical and policy efforts will also be intensified to make news comments a more transparent and clean communication space.
Comments confirmed by the National Election Commission to violate election laws will be deleted immediately. After a warning, users repeatedly caught will be restricted from posting comments. To prevent excessive replies on a single article, the number of replies one person can post per article will be limited to 10.
Additionally, transparent statistical information on comments will be provided to minimize unnecessary misunderstandings. For articles with a certain number of comments, active participation information will be provided based on the ratio of comments to cumulative views. Ratio statistics per article will be displayed based on whether the user is domestic or foreign, collected during the identity verification process at membership registration.
Choi Seong-jun, a member of the News Innovation Forum, said, "I hope Naver fulfills its responsibility as a national platform by minimizing rights infringements caused by media reports and making efforts to prevent the spread of false information through comments."
