Naver Pay Launches First Commercial Use of 'FaceSign Payment' at Kyung Hee University
Naver Pay announced on the 11th that it will launch the 'Facesign' payment service based on artificial intelligence (AI) facial recognition technology at Kyung Hee University Seoul Campus.
Facesign payment is a service that allows users to easily register their facial information using their smartphones and make fast and convenient payments through facial recognition alone, without the need for cards or smartphones. The introduction at Kyung Hee University Seoul Campus is the first commercial case of the Naver Pay Facesign payment service. Previously, it was utilized at Naver’s office building ‘1784’ for employee access, payments, and system logins, where its convenience and security were already verified.

Payments are made using the Naver Pay Money or Points they hold. Users only need to register their facial information once on the Naver Pay app using their smartphone, without the hassle of registering at designated devices or locations.
The entire Facesign payment process is based on AI technology, characterized by fast recognition speed, high accuracy, and security. When facial information is first registered, the three-dimensional data of the user’s face undergoes precise AI analysis and is encrypted into feature values for secure storage. During the registration process, Naver Pay’s Fraud Detection System (FDS) verifies the identity of the person attempting registration. Facial registration is not allowed if attempted through abnormal methods. At the payment stage, a deep learning model compares the registered facial information with the face confirmed by the Facesign-exclusive device, quickly identifying the user with over 99% accuracy. Afterward, the payment proceeds following an AI-based FDS authentication process.
Facesign payment combines Naver Pay’s simple payment service with Naver Cloud’s AI technology and was introduced as a future payment trend based on AI technology at the ‘Korea Fintech Week 2023’ hosted by the Financial Services Commission in August last year. It received significant attention for its advanced technology that completely blocks payment attempts using photos or videos instead of a real face.
Going forward, Naver Pay plans to continuously enhance the service based on user feedback from Kyung Hee University Seoul Campus. They intend to expand payment locations to places with high Facesign payment usage, such as university campuses, companies, and theme parks, where repetitive payments occur regularly within a certain area.
