Exceeding Targets by Over 110% for 3 Consecutive Years, Recognized for Excellent R&D Achievements
Busan Port Authority (BPA) was selected as an excellent institution in the 2023 Public Institution R&D Investment Recommendation Evaluation by the Ministry of Science and ICT and received a ministerial citation.

View original imageThe Ministry of Science and ICT operates the R&D Investment Recommendation system to strengthen the technological competitiveness of the public sector by expanding R&D investment and enhancing research outcomes. It evaluates compliance with recommendations and performance for 39 public institutions (as of 2023).
Since being designated as a recommended institution in 2020, BPA has been selected as an excellent institution with an average R&D investment achievement rate exceeding 110% over three years.
In particular, in 2023, BPA achieved 232% of its R&D investment rate target and made various achievements in the field of eco-friendly smart port R&D.
Since establishing a dedicated R&D department in 2019, BPA has actively conducted research activities, including directly planning and attracting national R&D projects.
▲ Development of an automated transshipment cargo transport system within the port (unmanned tram) ▲ Development of smart port autonomous ship linkage technology ▲ Establishment of an intelligent unmanned automated smart logistics system, among various research projects, BPA is focusing on securing core technologies for smart ports.
Additionally, to expand technology centered on port sites and private-sector cooperative technology development, BPA participated in the Win-Win Cooperation Fund project of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, achieving results such as about 10 patent applications through projects like ▲ Development of domestic spreader technology ▲ Development of piezoelectric power generation systems.
Ongoing projects include ▲ Continuous diagnosis technology for port crane wire ropes ▲ Anti-toppling devices for port cranes ▲ Port-type robot automation-based unmanned aerial vehicle stations ▲ Mechanical pest control systems, and BPA is also striving to develop various new technologies in collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises.

BPA President Kang Jun-seok stated, “Through the development of smart technologies optimized for unmanned automated ports, we will make Busan Port the best transshipment hub port and continue to actively invest in R&D by expanding technology investment and cooperation with small and medium-sized enterprises.”
