Ministry of Industry: "Stable Power Supply This Winter Despite Record Temperature Fluctuations"
This winter, the daily average temperature deviation exceeded 20℃, marking the largest deviation on record, and the gap between peak and lowest electricity demand was also significant. However, despite rapid temperature fluctuations, generally warm weather conditions persisted, resulting in stable electricity supply and demand throughout the winter.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 6th that the gap between the maximum and minimum electricity demand this winter reached 52.3GW, the highest level ever recorded.
This winter was characterized by very high temperature volatility compared to previous years. According to the ministry, the daily average temperature deviation reached a record high of 20.6℃, with 12.4℃ recorded on December 9 and -8.2℃ on December 22 last year.
The peak electricity demand this winter was 91.6GW, recorded at 10 a.m. on December 21 last year, while the lowest demand was 39.3GW, occurring at 1 p.m. on the 10th of last month during the Lunar New Year holiday period.
An official from the ministry said, "The gap between the maximum and minimum electricity demand in winter was the largest ever. As the demand gap within the same season gradually widens, the challenges of managing stable electricity supply and demand have also increased."
This winter, the electricity authorities actively minimized coal power generation to reduce fine dust. Considering fuel supply and electricity demand conditions, up to 15 units were shut down, and output caps limiting maximum output to about 80% were applied to up to 47 units. As a result, coal power generation from December to February dropped to a record low of 48,761 GWh, a 5% decrease compared to the same period last year. The electricity authorities plan to actively cooperate in reducing fine dust this spring as well, within the scope of maintaining electricity supply and economic feasibility.
