Gwangju Nam-gu Ranks First in Gwangju for Two Consecutive Years in 'Local Government Safety Capability Evaluation'
Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim Byeong-nae) announced on the 4th that it ranked first among autonomous districts in Gwangju for two consecutive years in an evaluation that surveyed local government safety capabilities in six areas: traffic accidents, fires, crime, daily safety, suicide, and infectious diseases.
By achieving the highest grade in three areas?fire, crime, and daily safety?the overall average grade across all six areas also improved compared to last year, making it the autonomous district maintaining the highest level of safety index.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety recently released indicators showing the regional safety index of local governments nationwide based on statistics from 2022.
In this survey as well, Nam-gu recorded the highest average grade among the five autonomous districts in Gwangju for the second consecutive year. The overall average grade across the six areas was 2.0, an increase of 0.2 from last year’s average grade of 2.2.
Looking at the status by category, fire, crime, and daily safety were classified as the highest grade 1. Among autonomous districts nationwide, only three districts?Nam-gu, Seocho-gu in Seoul, and Dong-gu in Ulsan?achieved grade 1 in these three areas.
Additionally, in the traffic accident category, Nam-gu received grade 2, and in the suicide and infectious disease categories, grades 3 and 4, respectively.
The reason for these achievements in the regional safety index evaluation is attributed to effective improvement efforts in vulnerable areas such as fire, crime, daily safety, and traffic accidents, which were classified as grades 2 to 3 last year, through cooperation with related agencies such as the Nambu Fire Station and the police station.
First, to improve the fire category, Nam-gu conducted fire lane securing drills at traditional markets, fire evacuation drills at multi-use facilities, established victim support centers and support projects to minimize fire damage, and actively carried out a project to install fire detectors free of charge in households receiving basic living subsidies.
As a result of these efforts, the number of fire incidents in the district decreased by 11.3% compared to the previous year.
In the crime category, Nam-gu actively promoted community policing activities such as installing security lights and patrol activities in cooperation with residents and the police station, and held the inaugural ceremony of the Nam-gu Autonomous Crime Prevention Union?the first of its kind under the jurisdiction of the Gwangju Police Agency?focusing on creating a city safe from crime.
Alongside this, in the daily safety category, efforts were made to enhance emergency response capabilities at various accident sites by providing CPR training to public officials and senior centers, managing first aid kits, and reinforcing safety facilities in high-risk accident areas.
