Wando Coast Guard, Marine Pollution Public-Private Monitoring System 'All Clear'
Meeting and Joint Patrol to Strengthen Marine Environment Conservation and Cooperation
Wando Maritime Police Station (Chief Lee Young-ho) announced on the 29th that it recently held a meeting with honorary marine environment monitors and a joint patrol at Pier 1 of Wando Port to promote monitoring and reporting of acts that hinder the discharge of pollutants into the sea and to spread a culture of marine environment conservation.

At this meeting, participants reviewed last year's operational performance and exchanged opinions to develop marine environment policy improvement measures, followed by a joint public-private patrol activity around Pier 1 of Wando Port.
The duties of the honorary marine environment monitors include monitoring and reporting acts that harm the marine environment such as the discharge of pollutants into the sea, collecting waste abandoned on the coast or in marine areas, public campaigns to prevent damage and pollution of the marine environment, and gathering and reflecting residents' opinions on the marine environment.
The Maritime Police have appointed 64 honorary marine environment monitors and have been actively engaged in marine environment conservation activities, including four marine pollution prevention education sessions and six marine environment cleanup activities (collecting approximately 12 tons) last year.
Chief Lee Young-ho stated, "The estimated annual amount of marine litter in our country is 145,000 tons, which is a major cause of marine accidents and ghost fishing (a phenomenon where marine life dies due to abandoned fishing gear and waste)." He added, "We will take the lead in creating a clean marine environment through private sector collaboration."
