Meeting Young Scientists and Technologists, Yoon Promises Introduction of 'Graduate Student Research Life Scholarship'
Dialogue with Future Scientists Held After Over a Year
Promise to Support Growth of Emerging Researchers
President Yoon Suk-yeol announced on the 16th that "starting next year, a 'Graduate Student Research Living Scholarship' will be introduced to enable full-time science and engineering graduate students participating in national research and development to focus on their studies and research."
This measure aims to prevent science and engineering graduate students from struggling with their studies due to poor conditions and to stop the outflow of talented researchers overseas.
The presidential office reported that President Yoon made this announcement during a "Dialogue with Future Scientists" held in Daejeon in the afternoon, where he invited young scientists to listen to their stories. This is the first time in 1 year and 2 months since December 2022 that President Yoon has held a dialogue with future scientists.
This event was organized for the president to personally meet the 2023 Presidential Science Scholarship recipients and International Olympiad awardees to offer congratulations and encouragement, and to freely hear their hopes and suggestions.
President Yoon said, "We are now in an era where countries with many outstanding talents and advanced science and technology become leading powers," and urged, "Future scientists must grow to develop new technologies and lead global science and technology."
He continued, "At the last event, I promised to expand the Presidential Science Scholarship to graduate students, and this year, a budget of 3 billion won has been allocated so that 120 people can receive the scholarship, fulfilling that promise."
Along with the introduction of the Graduate Student Research Living Scholarship, President Yoon also promised support for the growth of early-career researchers.
