Daegu City Renovates 2·28 Jungang Park Over 20 Years Old... 2.2 Billion Won Spent, Completion by Year-End
Daegu City announced on the 15th that, according to the ‘Dongseongno Renaissance Project’ promotion plan, the 2·28 Memorial Central Park will be redeveloped into a premium urban park filled with youth and vitality through the creation of event, festival, and healing spaces.
As a measure to revitalize Dongseongno, Daegu City will invest 2.2 billion KRW from August 2023 to December 2024 to renovate the 2·28 Memorial Central Park located in Gongpyeong-dong, Jung-gu, into an open urban space full of youth and vitality.
The 2·28 Memorial Central Park is an aging urban park that has been in place for over 20 years. The park is densely covered with trees, some of which are unhealthy, resulting in a dark and enclosed atmosphere that has led to decreased public use. Through this renewal project, the park is expected to be expanded into a vibrant cultural space connected to Dongseongno, the heart of Daegu, and reborn as an open and highly usable lawn plaza.
To transform the 2·28 Memorial Central Park into a plaza of youth, the ‘Dongseongno Renaissance Project’ urban space public-private council (including the Dongseongno Merchants Association, professors and experts, and relevant officials) was formed. After four rounds of consultation and discussion, the basic plan for the 2·28 Memorial Central Park renewal project was established.
According to the basic plan, while maintaining the existing park layout, a bright and open lawn plaza with high usability will be created in the center, and pedestrian pathways connecting the green spaces within the park will be designed. The existing fabric structure pergola (outdoor stage) will be remodeled and maintained, and existing park facilities and trees will be utilized as much as possible to create a brighter park.
On the north and west sides of the park, the main entrances and exits will be expanded from four to nine to improve convenience and openness for park users. Additionally, near the north entrance, a permanent busking stage and deck (wooden floor) stand rest area will be installed to allow visitors to enjoy performances such as busking. The existing restrooms and management office will be remodeled with consideration for the park’s landscape.
The east and south sides of the park, adjacent to private buildings and stone walls, will be developed into a stone wall path with wooden floor walkways and street rest areas, with nighttime landscape lighting installed. This will create a space where anyone can enjoy the beautiful atmosphere of the urban park while strolling along the stone wall path.
Furthermore, the park’s existing excellent trees (such as pine, maple, and crape myrtle) will be preserved as much as possible, while overcrowded and poorly shaped trees will be pruned. Additional woody plants will be planted to provide diverse visual attractions for visitors.
The 2·28 Memorial Central Park renewal project will complete detailed design by May this year based on the basic plan, and construction will begin after the Powerful Daegu Festival, Daegu’s representative festival, in mid-May, with completion scheduled by the end of December.
