National Honam Biological Resources Center Establishes Mid- to Long-Term Research Strategy for Island and Coastal Biological Resources
Focus on Improving Quality of Life and Solving Future Issues Using Biological Resources
The National Institute of Biological Resources in the Honam Region (Director Ryu Tae-cheol, hereinafter referred to as the Institute), under the Ministry of Environment, announced on the 13th that it has established a "Mid- to Long-term Research Strategy for Island and Coastal Biological Resources" and built a roadmap for the period from 2024 to 2028.
Since its opening in May 2021, the National Institute of Biological Resources in the Honam Region has been conducting full-scale surveys, discoveries, and applied research on island and coastal biological resources. Based on the research results of the past three years, it has identified strategic research topics to be carried out over the next five years and set an annual roadmap.

The main contents of the mid- to long-term research strategy include △ analysis of domestic and international environmental changes and biological resource research conditions △ identification of mid- to long-term research tasks for island and coastal biological resources △ implementation plans for the mid- to long-term research strategy and performance management plans.
Until last year, as the institution was in its initial phase, the focus was on basic purpose projects based on the "Biological Resources Institute Act" and the "1st Basic Plan for the Biological Resources Institute." However, starting this year, the research scope will be expanded and promoted as differentiated specialized research projects preparing for future society, such as digital innovation, green growth, and responses to climate and environmental crises.
In addition, based on five major themes including "climate tech," an annual plan for a total of 65 core topics has been established, and a technology commercialization implementation process and promotion system will be built to support the industrialization of island and coastal biological resources and the regional bioindustry.
This research strategy also includes plans for interdepartmental collaboration, cooperation with related organizations and private companies, and dissemination of outcomes to create research synergy, adding further significance.
