Eunpyeong Tongillo Sports Center Staff Save Swimming Pool Member in Cardiac Arrest with Emergency First Aid
At the Eunpyeong Unification Road Sports Center, a public facility managed by Eunpyeong-gu in Seoul, staff quickly administered emergency treatment to a resident who lost consciousness due to cardiac arrest during a swimming lesson, saving a precious life.
According to Eunpyeong-gu, around 9:30 a.m. on the 7th, member A, who was taking a swimming lesson at the sports center, lost consciousness and began to sink underwater. Upon noticing this, the swimming instructor and safety personnel moved the member to the surface and performed emergency treatment including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The swimming instructor and the center team leader called 119 and performed CPR as they had been trained. They provided appropriate emergency care, including using an automated external defibrillator (AED) while communicating with the 119 rescue team via video call. Member A soon regained consciousness. Afterwards, the 119 rescue team arrived and transported the patient to Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital. The patient is recovering stably.

Park Nak-heung, chairman of the Eunpyeong-gu Sports Council, which is in charge of delegated operations, stated, “We will continue to focus on staff training for emergency situations.” Kim Mi-kyung, mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, said, “I sincerely thank the staff who protected the precious life of a resident through prompt and active emergency treatment,” adding, “Taking this incident as an opportunity, we will do our best to ensure that residents can use public sports facilities more safely and healthily in the future.”
