US Transportation Secretary: "With Current Technology, Human Must Control Driving"
Apple User Guide: "Do Not Use When Safety Requires Caution"
Apple's mixed reality (MR) headset 'Vision Pro' has been generating significant buzz, and a video showing the device being used while driving has surfaced. U.S. transportation authorities have urged restraint, citing the high risk of traffic accidents.
On the 5th (local time), Pete Buttigieg, U.S. Secretary of Transportation, posted the problematic driving video on his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, "Reminder - All advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) currently available require the human driver to remain in control of driving tasks and be fully engaged at all times."
Additionally, the British Guardian mentioned that Secretary Buttigieg had previously urged caution regarding Tesla's autonomous driving features. At that time, Tesla also stated that its autonomous driving functions should be used only when the driver keeps their hands on the steering wheel and is ready to take control at any moment.
Foreign media outlets such as CBS reported that the video had reached 24 million views. In the video, the driver is seen wearing what appears to be Apple's MR headset 'Vision Pro,' released on the 2nd, with both hands completely off the steering wheel. The driver is engrossed in manipulating virtual screens, and the vehicle is reported to be a Tesla Cybertruck.
This Tesla model features a 'Level 2' autonomous driving system that can adjust lanes and speed on its own. However, human intervention is required for variables the system cannot handle during driving, so the driver must not remove their hands from the steering wheel.
MR extends augmented reality (AR), which overlays three-dimensional virtual objects onto the real world. When wearing an MR headset, the user's field of vision is not completely blocked. Since the release of Vision Pro, foreign media have reported growing safety concerns in the U.S. as people have been seen walking the streets or exercising at gyms while wearing the Vision Pro.
Apple's user guide explicitly states, "Do not use the device in situations where safety is required, such as driving a moving car, bicycle, or heavy machinery."
