Kim Eui-gyeom, Who Raised 'Cheongdam-dong Drinking Party Suspicion,' Ultimately Sent to Prosecution
Kim Eui-gyeom, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea who raised the so-called 'Cheongdam-dong drinking party suspicion,' has ultimately been referred to the prosecution.
On the 21st, the Seoul Seocho Police Station announced that it had sent Kim, who was accused of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act, to the prosecution at the end of last year.
Earlier, on October 24 of last year, the police judged the Cheongdam-dong drinking party suspicion to be false. Subsequently, the former representative of the YouTube media outlet 'Citizen Media The Tamza,' Kang Jin-gu, who raised the suspicion, was sent to the prosecution.
However, Kim was not prosecuted due to parliamentary immunity. Members of the National Assembly are granted immunity so that they are not held responsible outside the National Assembly for statements and votes made in the course of their duties within the Assembly.
Afterward, the complainants opposed the police's decision not to prosecute and filed an objection, which reportedly led to Kim's case being transferred to the prosecution. According to the Criminal Procedure Act, if a complainant who has received a non-prosecution notice files an objection, the police must promptly send the case to the prosecutor.
In October 2022, during a comprehensive audit by the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee, Kim raised suspicions that then Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon had a late-night drinking party at a high-end bar in Cheongdam-dong on July 19-20 of the same year with President Yoon Seok-youl and 30 lawyers from the law firm Kim & Chang.
