Power Outage in the Area... No Casualties Reported
A moon bear that had climbed a high-voltage transmission tower in China died from electrocution.
On the 9th, local media including Pengpai News reported that on the 7th, the Qinzhou City Forest Public Security Bureau announced that a moon bear was found dead near a high-voltage transmission tower in Danliaoshan, Napengjin, Qinnan District.
The deceased moon bear was discovered by electricians. At the time, the electricians were inspecting the power lines to identify the cause of a power outage in the transmission tower area.
The Forest Public Security Bureau stated, "Regarding the bear's electrocution, there were no human casualties, and power supply was soon restored."
The media reported that the reason why the bear climbed the transmission tower has not been confirmed. It is also unclear whether the bear escaped from a farm where it was being raised.
Meanwhile, since 2014, wild moon bears have been spotted four times in Guangxi, including an adult male with a distinct V-shaped white fur on its chest captured on CCTV in Yuanbaoshan, Guilin City, in August 2022.
The moon bear is a subspecies of the Asian black bear and historically inhabited the entire Korean Peninsula centered around the Baekdudaegan mountain range. Globally, the Asian black bear is classified as a vulnerable species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
