North Fires Over 200 Artillery Rounds into the West Sea (2nd Report)
North Korean forces conducted coastal artillery firing in the northwestern island area. This marks the first time in 1 year and 1 month that North Korean forces have conducted firing exercises in the maritime buffer zone since December 6, 2022, when they carried out drills around Goseong and Geumgang in Gangwon Province.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that on the 5th, starting around 9 a.m., North Korean forces fired more than 200 rounds over a two-hour period in the area around Jangsan-got north of Baengnyeongdo and Deungsan-got north of Yeonpyeongdo. There were no casualties or damage to our citizens or military personnel, and the impact points were north of the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea, the Joint Chiefs added.

The maritime buffer zone was established in the West Sea and East Sea areas along the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in 2018 under the September 19 Inter-Korean Military Agreement to prevent maritime armed conflicts. Conducting artillery firing or maritime maneuvering exercises in the maritime buffer zone constitutes a violation of the military agreement.
