Busan Office of Education to Address Learning Gaps During School Vacation
Starting from the 8th, WeCanDo Operates Residential Character English and Math Camp
Old Downtown and Western Busan Area... Enhancing Educational Competence and Reducing Educational Gaps
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education is launching programs to address the learning gap during vacations for low-income and vulnerable students, and to enhance the educational capacity and community skills of students in the old downtown and western Busan areas.
From January 8th, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education will operate the "Residential Character English and Math Camp" and the "We Can Do Seasonal School" for three weeks.
The "Residential Character English and Math Camp" targets 380 first-year middle school students and is held at five universities: Kyungsung University, National Pukyong National University, National Korea Maritime and Ocean University, Dong-Eui University, and Silla University.
Each university hosts 76 students, who receive instruction from native-speaking professors and other teaching staff using excellent educational facilities such as university dormitories. Classes are conducted using level-based English and math textbooks developed by the city education office’s English and Math Support Team, as well as materials created by the universities.
The universities also run specialized programs and guide students through various activities.
On January 8th at 11 a.m., the Busan Office of Education will hold an opening ceremony for the camp at Kyungsung University and other participating universities, marking the official start of the program.
The "We Can Do Seasonal School" is a commuting program held at Yeongdo Jeil Middle School for about 160 first-year middle school students over three weeks starting January 8th. Various courses in Korean, math, and English are offered to support students’ learning during the vacation.
Students attend 12 subject-specific courses selected according to their level, studying six sessions per day, and also participate in special lectures related to career paths, college entrance, and study methods.
To operate the "We Can Do Seasonal School," the Busan Office of Education selected 21 outstanding middle school teachers from the Busan area as instructors through a public recruitment process in November last year. These teachers carefully designed 12 courses through subject consultations and created the teaching materials themselves.
All camp participation costs, including lunch, are covered by the city education office. To facilitate students’ commuting, shuttle buses with commuting guidance teachers are provided. To welcome the seasonal school operated in the local area, Yeongdo District also supported the production of teaching materials and learning supplies.
