Ministry of Science and ICT: Number of Areas Using I-eum 5G Doubles from 26 to 54
Expanded to 54 Sites Across 30 Companies and Institutions Nationwide
Advanced Technology and Ieum5G Integration, Revitalizing the Digital Industry
Last year, the use of Ieum 5G more than doubled compared to the previous year. Ieum 5G refers to a communication network built by companies and institutions in specific zones, enhancing the advantages of 5G mobile communication such as ultra-high speed, ultra-low latency, and ultra-connectivity.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 3rd that the use of Ieum 5G increased more than twice compared to the previous year, expanding to 54 sites across 30 companies and institutions nationwide by the end of 2023.
In December 2021, Naver Cloud became the first domestic operator to be allocated Ieum 5G frequencies, marking the beginning of service introduction.
In 2022, usage began in 26 sites across 9 fields including manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. Last year, it expanded to 54 sites in 14 fields such as automotive, shipbuilding, steel, and education, spreading its application across all industrial sectors.
The Ministry of Science and ICT opened a website to provide information on the latest domestic and international deployment cases, equipment and terminal supply status, and held seminars to support Ieum 5G deployment. They also offered 'on-site consulting' for frequency applications and technical support.
Through these efforts, Ieum 5G is being utilized in various fields. In manufacturing, it improves productivity with more stable and faster data processing compared to existing Wi-Fi, and prevents major accidents through real-time monitoring.
In logistics, it enhances work efficiency by enabling fast and secure data processing for Personal Digital Assistants (PDA). Services using AI and cloud-based indoor autonomous robots to deliver lunch boxes, mail, and other items to employees are also underway.
When advanced technologies such as AI, digital twins, augmented reality (AR), extended reality (XR), and metaverse are linked with Ieum 5G, it is expected to activate the digital industry ecosystem.
