Daedong Hospital Ranks 1st in Busan and 10th Nationwide in This Year's Ministry of Health and Welfare Emergency Medical Institution Evaluation
Daedong Hospital (Director Lee Kwang-jae) Regional Emergency Medical Center has received the highest A grade in the ‘2023 Emergency Medical Institution Evaluation’ recently announced by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
In particular, Daedong Hospital ranked first among the eight regional emergency medical centers in the Busan area and 10th nationwide among 130 regional emergency medical centers in this evaluation. Currently, there are a total of eight regional emergency medical centers operating in Busan, including Busan National University Hospital.
The ‘2023 Emergency Medical Institution Evaluation’ conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare targets a total of 412 emergency medical institutions designated under the Emergency Medical Services Act, including regional emergency medical centers, local emergency medical centers, and local emergency medical institutions.
The evaluation is conducted annually to improve the quality of emergency medical services and to establish the functions and systems of emergency institutions by type, ensuring that Korean citizens can receive reliable emergency services anytime and anywhere.
In this year’s evaluation, Daedong Hospital Regional Emergency Medical Center met the essential criteria for facilities, equipment, and personnel, and achieved perfect scores in evaluation items such as infection control, appropriateness of violence prevention and response, appropriateness of patient transfer and preemptive measures, appropriateness of treatment for severe emergency patients, adequacy of dedicated medical personnel including specialists and nurses, user convenience and patient satisfaction surveys, emergency room operational efficiency, final treatment provision rate, level of cooperative physicians, and reliability of emergency medical information, ranking first in Busan and 10th nationwide.
After the bankruptcy of Chimrye Hospital in 2017, Daedong Hospital reinforced its facilities and equipment and increased personnel to fill the emergency medical service gap in the eastern Busan area, receiving designation as a regional emergency medical center from Busan City on January 1, 2019. Currently, it secures university hospital-level personnel including eight dedicated specialists, nurses, and emergency medical technicians, providing emergency patient care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Especially for severe emergency patients such as those with emergency brain diseases, heart diseases, and trauma, Daedong Hospital has secured spaces such as general observation areas, intensive monitoring zones, pediatric observation areas, and isolation zones. It has also established a state-of-the-art emergency medical system, including a separate resuscitation room accessible directly from ambulances for professional treatment of cardiopulmonary resuscitation patients in an independent space.
Additionally, the hospital operates a screening clinic equipped with anterooms and negative pressure isolation rooms to classify patients using the Korean Triage and Acuity Scale (KTAS) and to prevent infections, establishing an immediate response system for infectious disease outbreaks such as the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby contributing to infectious disease control.
Kim Mi-ran, Director of Daedong Hospital Regional Emergency Medical Center (Emergency Medicine Specialist), stated, “Since its opening in 1945, Daedong Hospital has served as a key hospital in the eastern Busan area for 79 years, operating 20 medical departments and specialized centers and continuously striving for rapid emergency patient care. Caring for approximately 30,000 emergency patients annually, our efforts have led to this year’s evaluation ranking us first in Busan and 10th nationwide. However, rather than resting on these results, we will focus on supplementing specialized personnel and building systems to enable faster treatment and response in severe emergency situations.”
