On the 26th (local time), the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage, and Tourism announced that Jerry Evans, a resident of Lepanto, Arkansas, visited the Crater of Diamonds State Park last spring and the gem he found was confirmed to be a genuine 4.87-carat diamond.
Evans discovered a small transparent stone just 10 minutes after arriving at the park with his girlfriend. He put the diamond in his pocket along with other stones he had collected and went home.
Later, he began to suspect that the stone might be a gem rather than just glass, so he sent it to the U.S. Gemological Institute for appraisal. It was then confirmed that what Evans found was a diamond, and he returned to the state park to officially register the diamond he discovered there.
Evans said, "The stone was so transparent that I thought it was a piece of glass," adding, "I really had no idea it was a diamond." The diamond Evans found is the largest one discovered in the park since 2020.

Meanwhile, Crater of Diamonds State Park is built on the eroded surface of a volcanic crater and was designated a state park in 1972. Due to its unique geological characteristics, gems such as amethyst and garnet are also found there. Visitors are allowed to keep the gems they find.
