Goheung-gun Designates 9 'Local Cultural Properties' This Year

Abundant Materials to Illuminate Local History, Some Proposed for Designation as Jeonnam Provincial Cultural Heritage

Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced on the 21st that it has designated and publicly notified nine local cultural assets of Goheung-gun in 2023, including ‘Heungyanghyeon Seonsaengan (興陽縣先生案)’.

The designated local cultural assets include a total of nine items such as ‘Heungyanghyeon Seonsaengan,’ which allows confirmation of 270 successive magistrates of Heungyanghyeon during the Joseon Dynasty, official documents and tombstones of meritorious subjects related to the Imjin War, and tombstones of figures who died in loyalty during the Byeongjahoran.

The nine newly designated items have sufficient value to be protected as local cultural assets of our county. In particular, ‘Heungyanghyeon Seonsaengan’ stored at the Goheung Yangro-won, the ‘Jinmuseong Old Documents Collection’ and the ‘Song Daerip Tombstone’ held at Muyeolsa Temple have been evaluated to have enough value to apply for designation as cultural assets of Jeollanam-do after comprehensive academic surveys and further research.

Additionally, the tombstones of generals Jeong Geol, Song Heerip, Song Hongyeon, Song Deokil, who distinguished themselves during the Imjin War, and the tombstone of militia leader Shin Gun-an, as well as the tombstone of General Song Chim who died in loyalty during the Byeongjahoran, were created and erected from the late Joseon period to the modern era. These are considered to have great academic value as important materials that can illuminate the local history of the region.

A county official stated, “We are currently conducting investigations on undesignated cultural assets within the jurisdiction, and we will continue to discover tangible and intangible local cultural assets to ensure that no cultural assets are neglected or damaged.”

Meanwhile, Goheung-gun is accepting applications for designation of local cultural assets at any time through each eup and myeon from clans or individuals who wish to apply.
